In my short career as a freelance writer, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work with kind and generous clients.
I’ve been working with one client for more than 9 years and there were a few other great clients who treated me with nothing but respect and kindness.
However, there were others who weren’t the same. I remember one client, who kept trying to squeeze every bit of work out of me while putting me under a lot of stress. Even though I was charging a very low rate at the time, this client was determined to get every last penny’s worth.
For several months, I gave everything I could for this gig and I was happy to receive a steady income at the end of every month. Simply put I let my guard down.
One day, out of the blue, this client ended the project and I was left with no other option. It all happened so quickly that I had to jump straight back into search mode to find another gig. I still had bills to pay and I wasn’t prepared for it.
From that day, I decided to always have a backup option and have another side gig as a safety net.
There is no job security in freelancing. You’ll never know when your favorite client will fire you. But we can create our own safety net to catch us when we fall.
I started several side projects of my own, including two websites that generated small side incomes (they are not generating income anymore). And a YouTube channel.
More importantly, I always tried to work with more than one client at a time.
Trust me, that side gig will save you a lot of stress someday.
See you next time!
