I see a new video or post on social media almost every day where people share their experiences of getting fired because of AI or companies being downsized.
As much as I hate to admit it, AI is starting to make most of our skills redundant. And it’s especially a massive blow to the freelancing industry.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been pitching to freelance jobs and companies, hoping to add an extra client to my portfolio. And I haven’t gotten a single positive response.
Companies are not interested in freelancers with specific/specialized skills. They are now looking for “jack of all trades” type of professionals who are capable of handling more than one task.
For example, instead of hiring writers, businesses now look for content creators who can create not only written articles but also videos, emails, and social media posts.
Since AI boosts the efficiency of many of these tasks, it’s understandable why companies want a single person handling them all at once, rather than hiring multiple individuals.
Businesses are always looking for ways to cut costs, quality comes second!
This changes how freelancers approach jobs.
Instead of focusing on one skill and becoming an expert at it, we now have to be multi-taskers in order to land a freelance gig.
This is the opposite of the usual advice you receive from experts—to stick to one skill and specialize. That’s not the case anymore!
Now, you need to be proficient in many skills and be able to handle multiple tasks all by yourself.
Freelancing is not a dying career, but it’s changing in a big way, very rapidly!
It’s time for us to change our ways.
You should start by adding some extra skills to your toolkit.
See you next time!

This is a great take. I also see that clients are asking expertise in a domain rather than a skill (i.e. demand gen instead of just blog content).
