I know most people think that freelancing is all about making profits.
We don’t have to commute to work, go to work events, office parties, and all that. Unlike most businesses, we also don’t have to buy inventories or pay for office space.
We provide a service and get paid. It’s as simple as that.
But the truth is what we pay in exchange for the freedom to work from home is way worse than that.
And I’m not talking about how we have to pay for all the software we use, the taxes, or living expenses.
I’m talking about our health!
Just recently, I shared a story about the side effects of working from home, talking about a sudden pain in my arm that made me go through a series of treatments.
That’s only one of the few health issues I’m dealing with right now.
After more than 10 years of working from home, the less obvious, long-term effects due to prolonged sitting are way worse.
Right now, I have back pain and a terrible slouching problem (which my wife says makes me look like a mantis). I’ve also gotten skinny because I eat less due to an inactive physical life.
But the worst part is I’ve lost a huge amount of my strength and stamina. I often run out of breath by doing the simplest physical activities like walking up stairs. And just recently, I sprained my back trying to lift a small chair.
I’m only 35 but starting to feel like 65!
These are just some of the costs that come with working from home and the freelancing lifestyle.
I know most influencers make it look like a dream with their nomad lifestyles and all. But when you’re seriously invested in your career, you need to deal with big projects and tight deadlines.
That requires dedication, commitment, and stability, which are hard to achieve when you’re traveling all over the place or working part-time.
However, I have zero regrets. I love what I do and I wouldn’t change a thing about my life. Well, maybe changing something small like going to the gym.
See you next time!

I think some of the health issues you highlight are less about freelancing in particular, and more about sedentary desk work. I'm in my mid-fifties and suffering from some of the same issues you mention (arm pain, back pain). I've worked in a desk job for over 30 years now and I put it down to that.
We need to get up and move around more during the day and take exercise whenever we can.
